Why Is Practical Training Crucial in Hospitality Education?

hospitality management course

Recent studies indicate that the hospitality and tourism sector required 11.8 million individuals in 2024 as compared to 11.1 million people in 2023

Despite the rapid growth, the skill gap in the hospitality ecosystem is evident, and if you are dreaming of a career in the hospitality sector, let us tell you a little secret: no amount of textbook reading or classroom lectures can fully prepare you for the chaos of real-world hospitality tasks. This industry thrives on action, agility, and delivering an exquisite, out-of-the-world experience to guests, and that’s where practical training comes in.
Trust us when we say this: “Practical training is the bridge between knowledge and execution.” It’s quite crucial for your hospitality career! Wondering why? Keep reading to understand why pragmatic training sessions are the lifeblood of hospitality education.

Importance of Practical Training In Hospitality Education

1. Learning By Doing
Hospitality is a hands-on profession. This means you can read about how to check-in guests or manage a banquet, but unless you are on the frontline handling a guest complaint that has gone awry or coordinating with the chefs for an event menu, you won’t really know what it takes. Theory can make your base strong, but practical training offers you the opportunity to apply everything you have learned and witnessed in action.

2. Building Confidence
Managing hotels or juggling between guest checklists can be daunting. When you are working in hospitality, you might be handling an overbooked hotel or a guest with a long list of special requests. Initially, these situations sound stressful, but practical training helps you tackle all these issues head-on with confidence.
When you have been through a few trial runs during training, you learn from your mistakes because they are a part of the process. Every event and error can teach you what works and what doesn’t, so you are better prepared when the time comes, and when it really counts.

3. Team Work Makes the Dream Work
When you take baby steps in this niche, the first thing you will learn is: that hospitality is all about teamwork. Whether it’s working with housekeeping to get rooms ready or collaborating with the kitchen to deliver a flawless dining experience, you can’t do it all alone. Practical training is the perfect way to understand how different roles come together to create a seamless guest experience.

4. Networking and Career Opportunities
During your training, you will meet industry professionals who can open doors for you. Internships and workshops are often where lasting professional relationships are built. Show enthusiasm and a strong work ethic, and we assure you will stand out and land your first job with some of the most revered and iconic brands in the field that carry a legacy of excellence with their name.

What’s the Difference Between Hotel Management and Hospitality Management?

hotel management v/s hospitality management

Every career choice begins with understanding what sets one option apart from another. If you’re considering a career in the service industry, you may have come across two similar terms: hotel management and hospitality management. Some people use them interchangeably, but they are distinct fields with unique focuses, responsibilities, and career opportunities. Understanding these differences can help you select the right path that aligns with your skills, passions, and long-term goals. In this blog, we will outline the main distinctions between the two and guide you toward the career that suits you best.

Hotel Management vs. Hospitality Management

What Is Hotel Management?

Hotel management focuses on the day-to-day operations of hotels, resorts, and other accommodations. It revolves around managing accommodations, food and beverage services, housekeeping, front desk operations, and guest relations. The primary goal is to provide guests with a comfortable and memorable stay.

Core Areas of Hotel Management:

1. Front Office Management
This department is the face of the hotel. Tasks include handling reservations, guest check-ins and check-outs, and addressing guest queries or complaints. Front office members ensure that the first impression of the hotel is positive and welcoming.

2. Housekeeping Operations
Housekeeping maintains cleanliness and organization across all guest rooms and public areas. A well-managed housekeeping team contributes significantly to guest satisfaction.

3. Food and Beverage Services
This section covers everything from managing restaurants and bars to room service. Managers oversee menu planning, food quality, and customer service.

4. Revenue and Sales Management
This involves setting room rates, managing bookings, and optimizing occupancy to maximize profits. Revenue managers analyze market trends to stay competitive.

5. Facilities and Maintenance
Hotels require constant upkeep to ensure their facilities remain functional and appealing. It includes managing repairs, safety checks, and overall maintenance.
If you enjoy working in a structured environment and are passionate about creating memorable guest experiences, hotel management could be your calling.

What Is Hospitality Management?

On the other hand, Hospitality management has a much broader scope. It includes sectors like hotels, restaurants, event planning, travel and tourism, and even luxury services such as spas or cruise lines. The focus is on creating exceptional experiences across all customer touchpoints.

Key Responsibilities in Hospitality Management

1. Event Planning
Hospitality managers plan and manage events like weddings, conferences, and festivals. They make sure everything runs smoothly and meets the client’s expectations.

2. Travel and Tourism
This includes managing travel agencies, tour operators, and tourist attractions. It focuses on helping people explore and enjoy new places.

3. Recreation and Entertainment
Hospitality managers also oversee places like casinos, amusement parks, and cruise ships, making sure guests have fun.

4. Food and Beverage Outside Hotels
Managing restaurants, cafes, or catering services also falls under hospitality. It involves maintaining quality, customer service, and efficiency.

If you enjoy a dynamic environment and want to explore opportunities beyond hotels, hospitality management offers a wide range of career paths.

Which Career Path Is Right for You?

Choosing between hotel and hospitality management comes down to your interests, personality, and long-term goals. Here are some questions to guide you:

  • Do you enjoy working in a structured, predictable environment?
If yes, hotel management may be the best fit.
  • Are you drawn to variety and the idea of managing events, travel, or even food services?
  • If so, hospitality management could be the better option.
  • It’s also important to note that the skills you develop in both fields—like problem-solving, communication, and leadership—are highly transferable, allowing you to switch paths later if needed.

Final Thoughts!

Hotel management and hospitality management may seem similar, but their differences open doors to varied and exciting career paths. Hotel management covers operational aspects of accommodations, while hospitality management spans industries that prioritize exceptional customer experiences. Therefore, take time to think about what excites you more. Both fields offer plenty of rewarding opportunities to grow and succeed, so choose the one that aligns with your interests and goals for a fulfilling journey in the service industry. Why I do what I do… Shalini Charles

Why I do what I do….
My journey from a hardcore Hotel operations person to academics was a seamless one … one that I never thought would be so smooth. I started enjoying teaching, training, and mentoring students, since I had significant work experience, it was easy to share my learning and work expectations industry demands.
As head of a private institution for 8 long years, I enjoyed every bit of meeting students, parents, help bring changes in the curriculum and network with industry heads. While I was happy doing what I did, somewhere I felt I needed to do something more. The challenge that hit me was..…we were training huge number of students for the hospitality industry but barely 10% of them stayed on, rest moved to other industries inside of a year. Reasons are plenty and I will save that for later. The question that bothered me, that if our degree students and many more like them did not fill the huge positions in the industry then who would?
Shortly thereafter I got the opportunity to move to beautiful Coorg and move away from the hectic city life of Bangalore. This is how AVS(Atithi Vriksha Shiksha- meaning teaching -anything under the Hospitality/Guest tree) was conceived… I wanted a very earthy name, with a Sanskrit meaning.
Fast forward to today, we have been successful in conducting short skilling courses and placing close to 350 students- with leading hotel chains in Coorg(where we are) and across Mysore and Bangalore. Our journey was not easy, we went through 2 Covid lockdowns, which lasted up to 11 months. Information about hospitality is limited in smaller towns of India and is not the first career option for many. Our USP is we train and give back-to-back 100% placements after our courses; we accept all kind of candidates, be it 10th pass or fail to unemployed graduates, if they have the passion to work and earn a monthly salary, we can work with them. What motivates us every morning is we work with some very genuine students, to ones who cannot speak a line of English, or know nothing about hospitality when we first meet them.
Today I speak Kannada, and personally take all subject classes as and when necessary… most of all I enjoy are culinary classes, where there is so much to innovate! We recently did Onam Sadhya with 31 items on the banana leaf. Each student made 3 dishes each after 2 practice rounds. The décor at the training center was done by our F&B and HK students. The guests were elated! I am blessed to have some very highly qualified and talented faculty who are back in Coorg and work closely with me to give back our leaning.
The biggest reward for all of us is the smile on their faces when they receive their first salary and then they come back with their parents in gratitude! What more can we ask for!

Md Tabarak- AVS Student

One of 8 siblings, Md Tabarak completed his graduation and did not find a job, he was depressed. On his sisters suggestion and a small loan from her, he came to us for the 3 month hospitality training. Today he is an integral part of the team at Halcyon residences.

He says “I invested a small amount on myself for the training and in less than 9 months my bank balance is over 1 Lakh, I could have imagined earning and supporting my family so soon after this course. AVS  helped me to begin my career I always been thankful to Shalini Ma’am & team for gave this opportunity.”

Kavya P- from BRT Tiger reserve to ITC Gardenia

Kavya Prabhakar- She came to us for 3 months Hospitality Skill development training towards livelihood for tribals from BRT Tiger reserve, this program was sponsored by both BRT Tiger reserve and TVSSST(TVS Srinivas Sundaram trust.) Soon after the training Kavya got selected to join the one-year apprenticeship program with ITC Gardenia.

In the beginning, Kavya was very shy, our faculty spent a lot of time to bring her and the rest of them out of their shell to open. It even took close to 3 weeks, for them to get used to wearing uniforms with shoes, the girls had never worn trousers.

Its so nice to see her steadily grow in her program at ITC Gardenia, very soon she will be completing one year.

We would like to thank TVSSST and BRT Tiger reserve in trusting us and with 20 candidates for this training for tribals.

AVS Student- Sathish Nayak

Meet Sathish Nayak who is a Food & Beverage associate at Lalit Mahal Palace Hotel. He came to us from Bandipur Forest as part of the tribals batch sponsored by Jungle Lodges & Resorts under the leadership of Mr Kumar Pushkar during his tenure as MD Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Sathish, never knew anything about hotels, his father is a farmer and there were not too many job opportunities in the forest area for Tribals. Today he is gainfully employed and working in a wonderful environment few hours away from his home.

AVS Student- Puneet

Puneet, after 3 months got selected for the apprenticeship program and has now completed one year with them.
This is what Ashika Theresa D’souza, Assistant Manager Food and Beverage, ITC Windsor has to say about Puneet – “Puneet has played an important role in handling Luxury hour operations and supporting the Dum Pukht restaurant. I have the honour to put on record that AVS students Pavan, Bheemaiah and Puneet have shown great diligence and hard work during the past months towards F&B Service Operations. Their peers have fondly shared their appreciation with the F&B Manager as well. The young talents have shown great discipline and enthusiasm in day-to-day operations and can be trusted upon for operational and administrative work. They have certainly set the standards high for rest of the team members to follow. We are privileged to have them as strong pillars to the team of Food and Beverage at ITC Windsor.

Natasha Kabra, our faculty who was their mentor says “Bheemaiah, Puneeth and Pavan started off like most other students – very shy, lack of confidence, poor communication skills and with absolutely no knowledge of how the hospitality industry works. Slowly, with a lot of individual attention, each 1 of them grew more confident, knowledgeable and sure of what they wanted to pursue. By the end of the course, they were amongst the top students of the class. We were sure they would get through their interviews with flying colors. During COVID our center was shut, despite poor connections they still logged in for class as often as they could. Today, seeing where they’ve reached with ITC Windsor Manor, makes us absolutely proud to call them AVS students.”

AVS Student – Bheemaiah

AVS Student – Sharanya K N

The one on the right in this picture is Sharanya our AVS student at Evolve Back Kabini.

Sharanya came to us in March 22, within 3 months- on 1st June she was selected to join Evolve Back Kabini as F&B Hostess. She has completed her 12th and continues to pursue her graduation by correspondence.
She was initially selected to join Evolve Back Coorg, however she never wanted to work here, as she was sure that if she stayed in Coorg, her parents would get her married. HR head at Evolve Back understood and moved her to Kabini, where she has blossomed.

As per Kanthi Aneesh, GM- Evolve Back Kabini- “Sharanya is always smiling, and is excellent with guests, she is also a quick learner”
Sharanya says “I love my job, this opportunity was only possible because of my training at AVS, where I learned so much about the Hospitality industry from the teachers, who remain my mentors even today. Special mention of Seema mam Sony mam Shilpa mam and Shalini Mam. I am really liking my job at Evolve Back Kabini, they treat me so well, and teach me if I don’t know something”
Sharanya has been a great student, who was always an eager learner, what touched us most, when she got her first salary, she sends us a picture of her salary slip and wrote a beautiful thank you note to all the teachers.” – Shalini Charles – Founder AVS
